Q. Do you offer a trial lesson?
A. Yes, you can take a free 30 minute trial lesson.
Q. If I decided to continue lessons do I have to buy a koto?
A. No. I have several instruments available for student rental at $15 monthly.
Q. What else will I need to purchase to begin my lessons?
A. You must purchase your own picks which cost from $40 to $120 depending upon quality, and a beginner's text book for $13.
Q. How often should I plan on taking lessons?
A. I encourage my students to take at least 2 lessons monthly and consider 1 monthly lesson a minimum for progress.
Q. Do I have to bring my koto to the lessons?
A. No, you can use my lesson koto unless you want to use your own.
Q. If I don't live close to you or do not have transportation do you offer online lessons?
A. Yes, I am currently conducting online lessons using Skype with webcam with good success.
Q. If I decided to purchase my own new koto, how much should I expect to spend?
A. Approximate cost for a student koto is $800-$900 plus stand. A new performance quality koto will cost $2,000 minimum, including case and bridges and will be shipped from Japan.
Q. I have noticed that traditionally the koto is played from the sitting position. Is there a more comfortable option?
A. Yes. Most contemporary koto players now use a special stand and a stool which is not only more comfortable but makes playing the instrument easier and more enjoyable.
Q. How do you structure your lesson fees?
A. Home studio (10 miles south of Eugene): 1 lesson $30, 2 monthly lessons $55 ($5 discount)
Portland area (I have numerous students in this area): 1 lesson $40, 2 monthly lessons $ 75 ($5 discount)
