THE SUMPTER VALLEY RAILWAY STORY
The past and present come together in the Sumpter Valley Railway. It all began in the late 1800's and was disbanded in 1947. The people of the county loved the "Stump Dodger" as it was called, and in 1971 the Sumpter Valley Railway Restoration was incorporated. Soon, the long ongoing task of bringing it all back together began. Today's SVRR is powered by one of the original 1915 Heisler gear-driven steam engines. It is the only wood burning, narrow gauge locomotive of this type still operating in the Pacific Northwest. Ride with us through the peaceful Sumpter Valley and enjoy the sound of the steam whistle echoing off the nearby mountains.
